Why You’d Want To Live Here

It’s a lovely summer’s day and I can almost see a skyline through a thickening shroud of egos…You can’t swim in a town this shallow because you will most assuredly drown tomorrow.

- Death Cab For Cutie, “Why You’d Want to Live Here”

Done, saw, eaten:
& . Stay at the The Beverly Wilshire Hotel: because the beds are super-unbelievably-awesomely comfy.
& . Did you see that malt with sprinkles? Yeah, it’s the Birthday Cake Malt from The Counter. [Happy Birthday, Schober. I hope this coming year is as delicious as that malt!]
& . Played skee ball at the arcade at Santa Monica Pier and be-bopped around at the Original Muscle Beach.
& . Stood in line for 45 minutes at Pink’s Hot Dogs for the spiciest polish dog ever eaten. (I should have gotten the mild!)
& . There’s a beautiful courtyard that is perfect for eating outside on these clear LA winter evenings lit with warm little white lights and those trusty heat lamps at Spago. Oh, and 2 Michelin stars. :)
& . Visit the Farmer’s Market then hop, skip, and jump over to The Grove for some shopping.
& . You can see clear to the ocean from the Griffith Observatory and all the lights from the vastness of the city not too far below.
& . Wait in rainbow colored line of plaid shirts for coffee at Intelligentsia in Silverlake, hipster central.
& . Go to Urth Caffe to run into your favorite cast members of The Hills.
& . And the cherry on top, the egg in the omelette, the frosting on the cupcake…get some cupcakes from Sprinkles to see what you’ve been missing all your life.

. . . . . . . . .

Miscellaneous (and not LA related), but notable:
& . Seven Rules to Understanding Design and Designers. Rule #1: Designers are meant to be loved not to be understood.
& . Look at these lovely things from the Rifle Paper Co.!!
& . Extreme awesome and weirdness. The Taylor Glacier “Blood Falls” in Antarctica.

We interrupt your regularly scheduled program for this:
THE COOKIE BLOG

Scott Sternberg of Band of Outsiders, CFDA’s menswear designer of the year in 2009, makes beautifully crafted clothes. He also loves cookies. And loves them enough to blog about them. :)

I am definitely following along on this sweet adventure. :)

D.C., It’s Actually Full of Stuff!

“Nation, I’ve always said that Washington, D.C. was a city of lies. For example, did you know that the Air and Space Museum is actually full of things?”

Stephen Colbert

Apparently, the National Portrait Gallery is also full of things. :) I recently look a trip to our fair nation’s capital, Washington D.C., to visit my BFF. It was a late stormy night, but that didn’t stop us from going to Ben’s Chili Bowl for some chili and a half-smoke!

I can’t remember the order that all of these places were visited, but they were awesome and I wanted to share. (Quite impressive for a weekend trip, if I say so myself!)
& . Enjoyed a lovely cup of tea and a cookie with my NYTimes crossword at Teaism while I watched the rainstorm roll by.
& . Took a stroll through the National Building Museum.
& . The sun finally came out and we took a walk down the National Mall and through the Hirschorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. (Even got in a nice nap with a view!)
& . Visited The Kennedy Center at sunset, looked over the Potomac River onto Georgetown and all of D.C. behind, and it was beautiful.
& . There were four Georgetown galleries open during FotoWeekDC 2009, “a photographic forum that engages people of all ages, races, and economic means, FotoWeek DC hopes to foster both grassroots initiatives and public/private partnerships to publicize global issues and encourage positive social change.”
& . Stood in line for half an hour at Georgetown Cupcake, for a good (but not great) cupcake.
& . Eat here: Leopold’s Kafe & Konditorei. Just do it. The mussels and desserts are highly recommended. :)
& . Eastern Market, a good place for fruits, veggies, and the fleas! (If you must know, I meant the flea market.)
& . Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, Georgetown. They were repairing the locks when I was there, so the canal was drained when I visited, but I would love to see it in all its glory.

There’s always next time. :)

Missed Connections

lovelights, 2008

“You were so into your book, I don’t think you noticed me falling in love with you.”

I really enjoyed looking through these Missed Connections. (via Oh, Joy!) I have a feeling that in NYC, missed connections happen all the time. You can walk by hundreds of people just going down the block to the grocery store or thousands of people on the way to work in the morning. You’re packed like a sardine in a tin can during rush hour in a little subway car, standing body-to-body next to a perfect stranger. I can’t help to think that many of these “missed” connections aren’t really missed per se because there’s a connection somewhere, if small and perhaps unnoticed. I think that’s why I love these — they illustrate, with imaginative clarity, those little moments that might mean something deeper to you even though they are often missed by others.

Even if you don’t live in New York City, I hope you find that moment to connect with someone today. :)
